HSCC Superprix 50 Years Of Formula Ford

Historic Formula Ford headlined the HSCC Superprix at the weekend (1st & 2nd July) on the famous Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit marking 50 years of the category of single seater racing…

With racing from other HSCC championships throughout the weekend the meeting belonged to Formula Ford, celebrating the achievement at the circuit where it all began on the 2nd July 1967 over half a century ago. Everyone who is or was involved in this now legendary formula were in attendance with Richard Mallock, Adrian Raynard and many others making an appearance to mark this special occasion.

Competing at the meeting were some of the Historic Formula Ford’s current championship contenders including the likes of Ben Tilley, Ian Jeary, Callum Grant with Saturday’s winner Sam Mitchell and Sunday’s double winner Cameron Jackson all racing hard in a superb weekend of Formula Ford wheel to wheel racing.

With track action from Formula Ford 2000, Pre 80’s Endurance, The Derek Bell Trophy, Historic & Classic F3’s and Formula Junior there was plenty on view for the spectators. The Historic Touring Cars put on a show with their usual style of driving, four wheel drifting into the bends and corners. Ford Cortinas and Mustangs doing battle with the Mini Cooper’s, a real blast from the past. BTCC from the 1990’s, the Supertourers, possibly the greatest period of the class when nearly every manufacture was involved only to price themselves out of the championship. The Honda Accord, Audi A4, Volvo S40 and the Peugeot 406 once again going head to head only this time round evidently not so committed…a shame more cars from this period did not make an appearance.

The Guards Trophy was brought to an early conclusion due to a heavy off when Mark Colemans Chevron B8 suffered a mechanical failure, sending the car into the barriers at Paddock Hill Bend and Mark Coleman suffering a broken ankle.

Also on the bill, racing from the Historic Road Sport and 70’s Road Sport and not forgetting the Classic Jaguar Challenge, with a 28 car grid of E Types, Jagusr Mk1’s and XK120 & 150′ s all pushing for class honours.

On the whole the weekend was a good one with good fine weather and plenty of excellent racing from a variety of racing categories.
